Removable Brew Group

Allows the opportunity to inspect and clean the mechanism that is the heart of the machine. Non-removable groups rely on an automated cleaning cycle. Machine will alert you when to drop in a cleaning tablet.

Grinder

The conical burr grinder has a long life span and excellent reliability. The ceramic grinder is inert and does not affect the coffee flavor, provides a more even grind and is quieter than steel conical burr grinders.

Bypass Doser

The bypass doser allows the use of ground coffee to be inserted directly into the brew group bypassing the grinder. Thus, if someone wants a different coffee, like decaf, the beans in the grinder hopper need not be removed. Will only make one cup per dose.

Heating Elements

An espresso machine has two main functions: brew an espresso and steam milk. The element to heat water for both of these functions is the boiler. A single boiler must serve both functions with the steam temperature needing to be higher than the brew temperature. A single boiler needs time to heat the water temperature to reach the appropriate level to produce steam. Once done with using the steam, more time is needed to return to the appropriate coffee temperature. Dual boilers eliminate these lag times.

Frothing

Super automatics support the creation of the microfoam needed for cappuccinos and lattes by providing a pannarello wand or a full cappuccinatore frothing device.

With single boiler models, the frothing process takes time to heat the water from brewing temperature up to steam temperature for frothing. (And after being used for frothing, additional delay is incurred to lower the temperature back to brewing levels before making more espresso.) With dual boiler models, one boiler is used for the brewing process and the other for frothing, avoiding time delays on both ends of frothing.

Value Description Alternatives
Frothing
unset — click to want Pannarello Only
Dispenses steam into a container of milk to create froth, which then must be transfered manually to the espresso cup. Odea Giro, Talea Touch Plus, Incanto Deluxe, Brera, Platinum Vision, Platinum Swingup, Impressa C5, and Magnifica 3300
unset — click to want Cappuccinatore
Draws milk from an container, creates froth, and dispenses the froth directly into the espresso cup. Royal Professional, Xelsis SS, Accademia, Titanium, Ena5, Impressa J5, Impressa C9, Magnifica 3500, Perfecta 5500M, and Gran Dama 6600

Water Filter

Water filters can make a difference in the taste of your coffee especially if your water quality is not the best. The filters help to prevent the buildup of scale. Organic additives may reduce or eliminate the need to decalcify.

Display

Indicator lights are efficient ways to show maintenance items like replacement of beans or water. Blinking lights could be confusing when they are used to represent more than one function. Digital displays allow clearer instructions and more options for maintenance and brewing variables.

Cup Warmer

Temperature and pressure are finely controlled during the brewing processes. Dropping espresso into a cold cup can be sub-optimal, so some people run their cups under hot water or even "shoot a blank" by shooting a couple ounces of hot water from the machine (without coffee) into the cup to heat it. Machines with cup warmers do not require such manual measures.
Value Description Pros Cons Alternatives
Cup Warmer
unset — click to want Active
Heats cups with a separate dedicated heating source.
  • Heats the cup the quickest of all of the cup warmers.
  • Increases the cost of the machine.
Talea Touch Plus, Royal Professional, Incanto Deluxe, Xelsis SS, Accademia, Platinum Vision, Titanium, and Platinum Swingup
unset — click to want Passive
Cup can be placed on the top of the machine on a plate which is heated by the water from the machine's boiler.
  • Better than no cup warmer because a warmer cup produces a better quality coffee with a good crema.
  • Takes a while for the warmer plate to reach temperature.
Odea Giro, Brera, Magnifica 3500, Perfecta 5500M, and Gran Dama 6600
unset — click to want None
No support for warming cups.
  • Coffee temperature will drop on contact with the cup and reduce quality.
