Operating System
The operating system of a tablet computer defines how hardware looks to apps and how
apps look to the user. Apple's iOS is the leader, followed by Android, which is built
by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. The rest of pack of tablet operating systems
are not even close to those first two. HP has admitted defeat and cancelled its webOS
development as of August, 2011.

Battery life is a challenge for tablets because they lack the power-sipping displays
of E Ink ereaders and the room for larger batteries found in laptops.
Durations determined empirically by Engadget (Performance and battery life table in latest tablet review) are used where available; otherwise, the manufacturer's battery life (typically
an optimistic best case) is given. [More realistic numbers than the manufacturer's
estimates are welcome.]

Tablet computers connect to the Internet via wireless technology. All tablets support
WiFi, allowing free web access near WiFi hotspots, whether at home or at many of restaurants,
hotels, and other business which provide free WiFi to their customers. To use the
Internet away from WiFi hotspots, choose a tablet that has cellular (3G or 4G) capabilities.
Like with cell phones, you'll have greater flexibility regarding locations from which
you'll be able to connect to the Internet. Access in a car (as a passenger!), for
example, typically works via 3G but not WiFi. Also like cell phones, 3G or 4G access
typically requires a contract with a carrier, although some tablet agreements (eg
iPad) allow shorter, month-to-month commitments.
If cellular service is important to you, consider the reputation and coverage of the
carrier or carriers that support the tablet:

Cellular Technology
Tablets with cellular capability use various cellular network technologies to communicate
with the Internet. The most prevalent cellular network technologies go by generational
numbers "3G" and "4G". Unfortunately, the definition of the "4G" designation has
become technically imprecise, and the ambiguity has allowed companies to take liberties
in marketing their network technologies as "4G". (See the
International Telecommunication Union's waffling on the definition of 4G if you want to wallow in the messy details.)

A tablet may be available in one or more memory configurations. Note that memory
size is often a significant factor in tablet cost. Also consider the availability
of an SD (or variations thereof) port which can be used to extend memory via an SD
card. The Kindle Fire has a novel approach to memory management: Although only available
with 8G and no SD slot, the Kindle Fire software will manage for you digital content
bought from Amazon by transferring content as needed automatically between the Fire
and unlimited Amazon Cloud storage.
